Continuing on my quest to read #newtome authors, particularly women authors. A bonus in this book was she is from India.
This was a debut novel from Anjali.
Right from the first page you could tell that this story was sitting in her for a while, and she needed to get it out of her and put it on paper. There was a coherence to the main story that you can see as the story flows steadily without going into tangents.
In this case, the story was an interesting one, based on the India-Pakistan partition of 1947 with some interesting twists and turns.
She is also a good writer. Not great or spectacular, but more than adequate. Her writing kept me engrossed but it didn’t consume me.
This is a multi-generational (4 generations to be precise) story and the long arm impact of the partition on families, relationships, and how they dealt with it.
The story starts at an interesting point — when they characters knew that partition was inevitable, but it hadn’t happened yet. That was certainly an interesting perspective. It also then allowed for organically introducing characters of different faiths and could showcase…
