If Sarees Could Talk — Navaratri2023 — Day 2 — Bengal weaves and Beige sarees

Happy happy #navaratri Day 2 from Amma and Me.

I am told today is white day. But I do not have a single, pure white saree. Clearly my saree sourcing team in India have been slacking. :)

On the other hand, I am glad I don’t have a white saree, because that allowed me to showcase this absolutely gorgeous beige saree and tell you this story.

Its a long one. Buckle up.

I was in Chennai for 1 day after my engagement. I would not be able to return again till my wedding, so that was the day we were going to buy my wedding sarees. I was (am) the Kohinoor of my mother’s Taj Mahal size dreams, so she had specs. 5 sarees of the finest Kancheepuram style from the best and finest stores of Chennai.

We would be joined by 4 aunts and a cousin on this spree. All with distinct choices, styles, with opinions, the self assumed God like blessing to offer their opinions and not one ever known to embrace silence or even low tones. And then, they invited my mil to come along. She diplomatically said no but then called the next morning and said she would love to come with us. I remember my aunts telling each other that they needed to keep their komalithanam (clown like behavior) hidden lest the new in-law think she is gaining a daughter from the circus.

All good. But 6 naturally gregarious women can’t be held down during a marathon shopping spree. Luckily my mil was a teacher —…
